We use the term ghosted when communication ends with another person without warning. It can happen with social media, dating sites, and even interviews. Regardless, being ignored can make you feel low self-esteem, confused, or even change your impression of the person. So, what’s the trick to not getting ghosted? We’re not dating experts, but we know a thing or two about the interview process.

Here are 5 tips to prevent you from being ghosted after an interview:

#1 Leave a Good Impression

First impressions start the minute you walk into the interview, so make it a good one! Dress for success and prepare to be inquired about your resume. Put yourself ahead of other candidates by formulating questions about the role and showing interest in the company.

#2 Ask for a Timeline

By asking what the hiring timeline entails, you’ll seem organized and professional. It also lets you know when to expect a phone call or email. Otherwise, you’ll think you are being ghosted after one week when they planned on getting back to you in two. 

#3 Don’t Wait to Communicate

Be sure to send your interviewers a thank-you note within 24 hours. If you don’t hear back after a few weeks, send a follow-up regarding the status of your application. In the meantime, you could request to connect via LinkedIn or consider reaching out to a different hiring manager.

#4 Continue to Build Relationships

Continue to build relationships and stay in touch using email or LinkedIn. If you turn company notifications on, you can interact with posts, stay up to date on the latest trends, and see new job updates.

#5 Give Them the Benefit of the Doubt

If it wasn’t on purpose, maybe the recruiter had personal matters or hasn’t addressed your application because of the vast candidate pool. Assuming good intentions helps you stay positive and professional for when they eventually get back to you.
